Hyundai Motor Group invested more than $7.5 billion to open a new electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Ellabell, GA, thanks to the IRA manufacturing incentive that rewards domestic electric vehicle production. The IRA tax credit allows EV buyers to save up to $7,500 on electric vehicles with domestically manufactured batteries. The new plant will create more than 2,000 construction jobs, followed by 8,500 high-quality permanent jobs. When the plan is running at full capacity, it is projected to produce 300,000 EVs annually. Additionally, Hyundai partnered with several Georgia colleges to provide job training for a wide range of clean energy jobs, including EV servicing, shop operations, and electrical principles.
In response to this investment, NewDEAL Leader and State Sen. Elana Parent championed a bipartisan Senate Resolution “recognizing February 26, 2024, as Hyundai Day” at the state capital. Her resolution praised Hyundai for “cementing Georgia's growing EV supply chain and ecosystem,” and “contributing to the local community by promoting STEM programs in local K-12 schools.”
