Education Policy Group

We must do more than return to status quo as we recover and rebuild our educational systems following the pandemic – we must offer solutions to address this challenge.

In the wake of evidence, like recent scores on the National Assessment for Education Progress (NAEP), which show too many students falling behind, the NewDEAL Forum Education Policy Group leverages the expertise of public and non-profit thought leaders to identify the most effective, actionable solutions to graduate more students on track for success in the workplace.

The group published its report of policy recommendations, “Aligning the Future of Education with Workforce Opportunities” in December 2020, building on recommendations produced by the NewDEAL Forum Future of Work Policy Group. The report will be followed by support from the group to implement those solutions across the country. The group considers topics at the intersection of education and workforce, including access to career pathways, reimagining career and technical education, and better linking K-12 and higher education systems, as well as a range of other key issues affecting the quality of education available to all young people. Read an op-ed in the 74 from co-chairs Montgomery, AL Mayor Steven Reed and Georgia Senator Elena Parent on why we must do more than return to status quo as we recover and rebuild our educational systems following the pandemic, and how these recommendations offer solutions to address this challenge.

The group’s latest product is “American Rescue Plan Funding: State and Local Spending Recommendations for College and Career Pathways”, a short briefing which draws on the major report to detail five policy recommendations for maximizing the unique opportunities created by a one-time, unprecedented infusion of resources via the American Rescue Plan.

Support for the group is provided by the Alliance for Excellent Education, a national nonprofit policy and advocacy organization based in Washington, DC whose mission is to ensure that every young person graduates from high school prepared for success in careers and in life. Funding from the Joyce Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation also supports the group’s work.
