To help Michigan meet clean energy goals, the Biden-Harris administration invested $1.5 billion to reopen the state’s Michigan’s Palisades Nuclear Plant. Through the IRA investment, Palisades will become the first shut-down plant to resume operations. The Palisades project received the investment through the Energy Infrastructure Reinvestment program within the IRA, which finances projects that repower energy infrastructure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Within one month of the reopening process, the initiative already created 200 jobs for the local economy.  The plant will produce enough electricity for 800,000 homes, and is projected to support at least 600 good-paying jobs. The clean energy from the Palisades plant will help move Michigan toward its annual goal of removing three million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, according to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

“Michigan will be a clean energy and advanced manufacturing powerhouse in the decades ahead,” Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, a NewDEAL Leader, said about the re-opening. “Let’s keep working together and building a brighter future.
